OK folks, let's please get this one straightened out:

I purchased the bridge pack (fine models, by the way) and - once again - I have issues with the LWO-format.

The objects look fine in LW, but when I put them into GC, the textures are screwed up (scale is wrong ?).  Loading FBX yields a miniscule object, loading MS3D format works perfect ... but, I use LW for my modelling and don't want to have to go through the MilkShape-format every time.

This is not the first time I have mentioned this.

Could Dexsoft provide a sample to the GC-folks  to get this fixed (I don't think I'm allowed to send it because of license issues) ?

Cheers,
Andreas

Oh, man....I thought it was just me.
I downloaded a couple of free models off of Turbosquid to check the quality vs. my own work.
They were .max files, so obviously LW couldn't open them, so I downloaded the trial version of Max (which I find very convoluted by the way), and exported them for LW. Doesn't matter what format I exported with, they all show up in LW as 100 times larger than scale.
I have had similar problems with Poser, only everything is freaky small.
You'd think all these brainiacs running these companies could at least get together on something as simple and as important as SCALE!!
I know, they all feel they have the right set up, but as has been proven time and again, artists use many tools and are not exclusive when it comes to software.

You seem to be having a different problem though, that revolves around GC.
I've said it before, GC's claims of LW support is kind of dodgy, and when you bring it up it tends to get shuffled to the back, because I don't think anyone on the team actually uses LW.
I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
I get the impression that they, like many others, are enamored with Autodesk....it is the industry standard, don't you know  Roll Eyes .....
If Milkshape works, why don't don't you just import into it, then export out.
I know it adds an extra step in the workflow, but it will be faster than waiting for someone to fix what is undoubtedly a non issue to the PTB.
Cynical ?....Yes.
I'll be the one over here with the other LW users, not turning purple from holding my breath, lol....

I use http://www.micromouse.ca/index.html for my 3d "utility" work like scale, moving layers around,... once I got used to the interface, this little program turned into my favorite 3d program for models.

Actually John still uses Lightwave regularly with GameCore - but the issue of ongoing updating & changing modeling package versions complicates things significantly.  Staying up to date with the many versions of each package is very difficult.

The version that we have internally is 9.5 (or so) and I know that he updated the loading code recently, but as far as I am aware, if you model in lightwave to meters, the translation from lightwave to gamecore will work fine.  I think that most of the formats that Dexsoft provides are exported from other packages (ie the lwo format models aren't actually from lightwave, but exported to lwo format from milkshape etc) - which may result in strange scale issues.

I could be wrong, but that's the only way that I can see them providing so many formats, which in my opinion reduces the value of the content packs.

Personally, I would rather content providers like Dexsoft provide a single common format (like OBJ, which everything will load) instead of batch-converted content into random formats like they do currently (far as I can tell).  It would also help if they provided some kind of info as to how each format was exported - ie the fbx was exported from 3ds max with fbx exporter version 'x' - ideally with some kind of standardization across their content packs.  This would help engine providers like us a LOT with making sure that their content loads seamlessly with the engine.

I know that Christian provides alot of packs to Dexsoft and has been using GameCore to test with - so at least with his content you can be pretty sure that at least one of the formats loads properly.

Having said all of the above, we've bought quite a few of the dexsoft packs internally (as you can see from our front-page / tour), and are very pleased with the quality of the models.

With each of them though, I delete all of the 'exported' files and simply load the models into Max & re-exporting them again, but that's just my prefered workflow.  I tend to rename objects / clean up surfaces, clear material paths etc prior to export to ensure clean import of all content.  I'm a bit of an organizational freak in that regard.

Since alot of the formats have absolute texture paths (lightwave, fbx, etc), this complicates creating content packs - particularly ones in so many formats like Dexsoft provides.

Anyways - not sure I answered any questions or am just rambling so I'll stop ;P

Nope ...  Wink

Simple point made was:

1.) the LW object provided in the Dexsoft Pack loads fine in LW (scale OK, texture OK).
2.) the LW object does NOT load properly in GC (texture is messed up)

Analog to Steely Dane, I'm NOT holding my breath (since this had been mentioned before) and can use MilkShape3D if need be (or AccuTrans), but I would prefer to use LW since I create my occlusion and collision objects from the orginial LWO object and want to stay within one format to avoid issues such as scale differences between a LWO-collision version and a MS3D-mesh (which makes perfect sense to most people, I think).

As was mentioned, the LWO support is not as solid as it should be (IMHO). Period.

So if it was up to me, I'd get John to fix this.  I'm using LW 9.6, but as far as I can tell, the LWO-format hasn't really changed from 9.5 ...

Cheers,
Andreas
