Thought I should share this because not all of you know about it. Some of you have seen a surface template called animation_example.srf.

This basically is a small template to to show different areas of a picture in a consecutive way. I thought about what it could be good for and an animated flame came up.

I found a picture with 25 flames side by side. Now, with the animation_example I loaded it into GC and applied on a box. The result was almost good except it needed tweaking. The template is meant for 4 pictures and has a value of 0.25. To use 25 pictures we need a value of 1/25 = 0,04

Download the image and try this:

Apply on a surface, preferably a plane.
Change blend mode to additive
Go to Advanved property tab
Go to UV Coords
Now enter these values:

U Scale: 0.04
V Scale: 1.00
U Offset: 0.00
V Offset: 0.00
U Animation: 1.5
V Animation: 0.00
U Anim Step: 0.04
V Anim Step: 0.00

Watch the result

Here is a pic of the flame (not animated of course) Smiley

PS. This should of course be combined with the billboard effect of a plane to make it always show in viewport

Very cool use for the texture animations =)

You could easily combine that with invisible objects and called fx to create some spectacular fire.

That's what that's for....I can think of dozens of uses for that.
Jet or rocket flame (on a cone object), for one.
Water falls and white caps on waves are another.
If one were to make some crazy procedural animations in your app of choice, the possibilities would be limited only by your imagination and skill

Yeah there are a ton of potential uses for this kind of thing - for example animated neon signs, anything that you would / could think of to use a flip-book style animation.

The quickstart racing template has a number of examples of using this kind of flipbook animation - flashing construction signs, etc...
