ive been looking for a good engine and i came across GameCore and i was wondering how hard would it be to make an RTS (real time strategy) with GameCore?

i have very little knowledge with coding and such but im fairly good with modeling and animating. if its possible is there anywhere that shows tutorials that show what i need to do?

thanks

Hey Afrokid, welcome to GameCore.

What a good time to find it =). We are just finishing up a new release with a host of new features. The good news is there is a ton of resource information. Just be mindful that with our new release upcoming some of the information may be out-of-date. Just comeback to the forums and ask anything, someone should be able to help. Okay the info you wanted:

http://gamecore3d.com/docs/    - The documentation for the engine

http://gamecore3d.com/docs/videotutorials   - some basic video tutorials

http://www.youtube.com/user/GameCore3d  - This is our youtube channel if you scroll down the list of videos on the right side you will come to the video tutorial section, 17 videos in all I think

Vibe2K also has a real nice course, check the forum for info

Okay so about the RTS... (What follows is just my opinion and not the official position of GameCore =P). Since you know your good at modeling and animation already I would start with a basic gameplay prototype. Like 3 unit types - ball, box, and (the dreaded) pyramid. Start with small milestones and just keep adding functionality. Get them moving to where you click, have them "build" a structure, ect. Find a manageable pace and keep at it.

Good luck and happy building

well that was not really describing because if you don't know anything about programming it can be hard. I don't know what the upcoming release includes but there is a "rts template" that so far basically has a player seen from above. When you click on the ground you make it move, there is a drag rectangle to select multiplte enemies and also when you come close to enemies they start to shoot. So, basically you can make some kind of RTS but it will take alot of addon to actually make it work as a real one

Just my 2-cents worth :

I don't know what quality of game you are aiming at producing, but IMHO doing anything "professional" will require significant amount of coding.  Because the individuality of your game will depend on the coding / scripting
that goes into the game.

It does depend on your expectations ... anything where you can "just click together ready-made parts / modules" to get a RTS-game will not be comparable to the professional games out there. Period.

So the question whether or not a good RTS-game can be made with GameCore is for me like asking "can I build a full-sized Star Wars Star Destroyer out of Legos" ... the answer is yes you can, but it's a heck of a lot of work. Wink

Cheers,
Andreas

I have a simple RTS template that I posted up onto the Combat : Spec Ops site:

http://www.combatspecops.com/2009/08/rts-sample-project/

Doesn't do a whole lot yet, but demonstrates the basics of unit selection, movement, how to use the pathfinding system, mouse controls, even has a very simple implementation of formations.

If you look at the camera script, there is also some code in there that shows how to do selection / movement of objects (which could be used for the building placement etc).

All in all, I think you could do a pretty cool RTS with GameCore.  Having control points to capture (ie triggers), construction (swap objects dynamically), etc are all fairly straightforward to implement.

The most complicated part would be the pathfinding - but the way that our AI & character scripts are designed lends fairly well to having higher-level 'squad AI' etc...
