I am pretty sure that i have seen a button at this place in the formerly GC versions. Usually the button to open the attached script for a player. Could anybody please enlighten me where it is now?

All of the script & controller related options are on the Controller tab (top of the image you posted).

Note that objects using default scripts are NOT editable on purpose.

Hmm, why is the button in one case labelled as Show Script and in another case Edit script? Is there a protection involved?

You can edit a custom script, but not an internal one. If you want to modify an internal script, you have to make a copy from gamecore scripts folder to your project folder.
