thanks man.

I tried normal mapping the leaves like you said in the "art pipeline" but it wasn't rendering right in lightwave...so I just used normal mapping on the bulk of the leaves and left the transparent double sided polys with just color, diffuse and spec, and transparency maps. I figured it wouldn't be terribly noticeable from far away.
